Turrialba is a pleasant hamlet midway between San Jose and the Caribbean coast. It was once a transportation hub connecting the two but lost this status with the opening of the Guapiles Highway and the cessation of the railway service in 1991. Turrialba now serves a a home base of sorts for white water rafting and kayaking. The town also serves as an excellent base for exploring the many attractions in the surrounding countryside.
